Ashigbey questions EOCO’s silence on NDC Executives over galamsey

Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to take immediate action against two National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives allegedly linked to illegal mining activities.

The Convenor of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition singled out the party’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, and National Vice Chairman, Yakubu Abanga, insisting that they be investigated in line with a directive issued by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine.

“The NDC’s National Organiser, National Vice Chairman, have been pointed out by the AG to investigate them. Unfortunately, EOCO, we have not heard anything from you.

“Just as they did to Akonta Mining [Chairman Wontumi], they should arrest these two gentlemen and conduct the investigations.

“We don’t see what is happening to Akonta Mining; he and his other director should be dragged to court,” Dr. Ashigbey said during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Sammi Wiafe on Monday, August 18.

His comments come in the wake of an official directive by the Attorney-General, contained in a letter dated Tuesday, July 15, 2025, instructing EOCO to invite Yamin and Abanga for questioning following reports implicating them in unauthorised mining operations.

Dr. Ashigbey stressed that selective justice undermines the fight against galamsey, noting that the silence from EOCO raises concerns about political interference. “The law must be applied without political bias,” he said.
