Ghanaian farmers deserve better – Isaac Opoku to gov’t

The Minority in Parliament has slammed the government’s newly announced cocoa price, accusing it of shortchanging farmers despite global gains in cocoa pricing.

On Monday, August 4, 2025, the government announced a new producer price of GH¢3,228 per bag for the 2025/2026 season — a slight increase from the previous GH¢3,100.

But Isaac Yaw Opoku, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, says the adjustment is deceptive and doesn’t reflect current realities. He argues that Ghanaian cocoa farmers deserve more, especially when Ivorian farmers are getting better deals.

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, defended the pricing, saying it represents 70% of the Free-On-Board (FOB) value, with cocoa sold at around US$2,600 per tonne. He claims this is an improvement over what the previous administration offered.

Still, the Minority insists the government has broken its own promises to farmers and owes them an apology.
