Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has strongly criticized the government’s approach to taxation and energy sector reforms, warning Ghanaians to brace themselves for additional tax burdens shortly.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Annoh-Dompreh accused the government of acting without transparency and bypassing public engagement in its decision-making.
“We are anticipating more taxes,” he revealed. “It is not that they have informed us. It is based on intel we have picked that they will be introducing more taxes within the next two years.”
His comments follow the passage of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill under a certificate of urgency, a move the Minority contends was rushed and executed without adequate consultation.
Annoh-Dompreh lamented that the process disrespects the Ghanaian people and undermines parliamentary accountability.
“This is the same government that has extended the sunset clause for the sustainability levy to 2028,” he said. “They raised it under the guise of coming to raise revenue without necessarily putting out new taxes, but we see through it.”
The Minority has pledged to push back through civic engagement, promising to take the issue directly to the people.
Annoh-Dompreh emphasized that their Members of Parliament will return to their constituencies to educate citizens about the implications of the levy and gather feedback for a collective response.
“Our MPs will go to their constituencies to explain to the people that this is the tax they’re going to pay, and we will take input from Ghanaians to shape our actions,” he said.
“We will stand toe-to-toe in solidarity with the people of this country. This is a slap in their face, and we won’t let it slide.”
