Ghana’s diplomatic assets in Benin to be restored, not sold

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed his commitment to preserving Ghana’s diplomatic assets in Benin, assuring that no government-owned property will be sold.
Instead, plans are in place to renovate and restore facilities serving the country’s diplomatic mission.
During a visit to Benin, he inspected several properties acquired by the Ghanaian government in 1999. Among them is a facility abandoned in 2019 due to fire damage that affected its electricity meter. While Ghana owns six properties in the country, only one remains unused.
Expressing concerns over structural issues in some of the more recently acquired buildings, the Minister highlighted the financial strain on mission staff, who have been forced to rent private accommodations.
He stressed the need for urgent renovations and, in some cases, reconstruction to ensure the properties remain functional.
“No property will be sold under my watch,” he declared, emphasizing his commitment to safeguarding national assets.
