Ghana’s donation to conflict and disaster-hit countries commended at IMO

The 135th Council Meeting of the International Maritime Organisation (C 135) in London on Wednesday commended Ghana for its recent humanitarian support to conflict-affected Sudan and hurricane-hit Jamaica and Cuba.
Naval Captain (rtd) Kamal-Deen Ali, Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, described the GH¢10 million donation as a demonstration of Ghana’s solidarity and fraternity with affected nations.
“By so doing, we exhibit the unique attribute that connects us as one people,” he said, earning applause for President John Dramani Mahama.
The donation includes 2,400 bags of rice, 540 bags of sugar, 377 boxes of medication, 500 mattresses, 500 pillows, 100 cartons of gari mix, 50,000 t-shirts, chocolate products, water tanks, hand wash stations, emergency toilets, and assorted clothes.
Distribution is planned with 50 per cent to Jamaica, 30 per cent to Cuba, and 20 per cent to Sudan.
During the 80th anniversary of the Manchester Declaration at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, President Mahama announced that personnel from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces will assist in reconstructing hurricane-affected areas in Jamaica.
The team, comprising engineers, masons, and carpenters, will help build makeshift shelters. He also urged African nations to provide urgent humanitarian aid to Jamaica.
