GHC 50m bail not too much for NPP — Prof. Gyampo calls out party’s hesitation to bail Wontumi

Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has waded into the ongoing controversy surrounding the GH¢50 million bail slapped on NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints, Prof. Gyampo dismissed claims that the bail condition is excessive or unattainable for the ruling party.

“Are we to be fooled into believing that the GHC50 million bail is too much for the NPP to meet? They are just afraid of using their properties to bail Wontumi, they think we don’t know what they have?” he quipped.

According to him, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have the means to meet the bail conditions but are simply unwilling to commit their personal assets.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week over alleged offences including fraud, money laundering, and connections to international organized crime.

Although bail has been granted, he remains in detention because his legal team has been able to provide only one of the two justified sureties required by the court.

The situation has ignited political tensions, with supporters staging protests and key party figures, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing the bail amount as “unrealistic.”

However, EOCO insists the amount is fair given the seriousness of the charges.

Prof. Gyampo’s comments challenge that stance, instead turning the spotlight on internal party dynamics and raising questions about the NPP’s apparent hesitation to stand behind one of their own.
