Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong, a known member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and political commentator, has raised concerns over the detention of Peter Mensah, the husband of Gifty Oware Aboagye Mensah, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
In a statement posted on social media, PK Sarpong alleged that Peter Mensah was picked up by the NIB earlier in the day in connection with ongoing investigations surrounding the National Service Scheme (NSS) controversy.
According to the post, his detention came as a result of Gifty Oware’s continued hospitalization.
“He was detained in his wife’s stead following the hospitalization of Gifty for some weeks now. He was told, ‘Since your wife is not in a position to assist us with this issue, we are detaining you to help us with it’,” Sarpong wrote.
He further claimed that the NIB was fully aware of Gifty’s medical condition and had made attempts to remove her from the hospital, only to be advised against it by doctors.
“The NIB is fully aware of Gifty’s condition and had sought to pick her up at the hospital where doctors cautioned against same,” the statement read.
Sarpong also questioned the basis of ongoing detentions related to the NSS matter, noting the absence of any formal charges.
“Whispers Media Network can also report that for all those arrests and detentions, not a single charge has been filed against Gifty Oware or any of her colleagues at the centre of the NSS brouhaha,” he said.
