GIS officer killed, another injured in armed attack at checkpoint

A late-night armed attack has left an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) dead and another seriously injured at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The incident happened in the early hours of Friday, October 3, 2025, at about 1:30 a.m., when unidentified gunmen reportedly opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint.

Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), Rafiq Mohammed, is said to have died instantly after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.

His colleague, AICOII Oppong Daniel, also came under heavy fire and suffered injuries to the jaw and back. He is currently receiving medical attention at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.

According to preliminary reports, police investigators who visited the scene recovered several AK-47 shell casings. They also found a GIS service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.

In response to the incident, a joint security team was swiftly dispatched to the checkpoint. The team was led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, alongside DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, the North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS.

The motive behind the attack is not immediately clear, but security officials have heightened surveillance in the area as investigations continue.
