Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity as they steer the country’s media landscape through increasingly complex times.
Sharing the message on her official Facebook page on Sunday, July 12, the Vice President revealed she represented President John Dramani Mahama at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected GJA National Executive on Friday, July 11.
“On Friday, the 11th of July, I had the honour of representing His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected National Executive of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA),” she wrote.
In her remarks at the ceremony, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the crucial role journalism plays in shaping democratic values and supporting an informed society.
“I highlighted the critical role of journalism in deepening our democracy and shaping an informed society. I urged the new executive to foster unity and demonstrate a renewed commitment to professionalism and integrity.”
Addressing the growing concerns around misinformation and public distrust, she encouraged the GJA to rise above partisanship and maintain its credibility as a trusted institution.
“At a time when misinformation is rampant and public trust is often strained, I called on the GJA to be the standard-bearer and a reliable source of truth that supports national development and helps inform sound policy decisions.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further urged the newly elected leaders to focus on legacy-building, noting that their tenure should leave a lasting impact on the association and Ghana’s media as a whole.
“Finally, I encouraged the leadership to take seriously the responsibility of legacy, to lead in a manner that will uplift the association, empower journalists, and contribute meaningfully to the future of Ghana’s media landscape.”
