All boxing events suspended following Bahubali’s Death

Following the death of Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has suspended all boxing events across Ghana.

Akushey passed away on Tuesday morning, less than two weeks after his September 12 bout against Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena, which ended in a stoppage due to internal bleeding.

In a statement, the NSA said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.

“It reflects the joint commitment of the NSA and the Sports Ministry to prioritize the safety, health and welfare of athletes,” the statement read.

Officials called on promoters, coaches, athletes, and the media to respect the suspension, which will remain in place until a full safety review is completed.

The move comes after a similar loss in April, when boxer Gabriel Aluwasegun died following a bout.
