GoldBod taskforce seizes GH₵1.4 million worth of gold, cash in bust involving 10 Chinese nationals

A major breakthrough in Ghana’s fight against illegal gold trading has been recorded, following a high-profile operation led by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Taskforce in Asankragua, Western Region.

The raid, which culminated in the arrest of 10 Chinese nationals suspected of engaging in unlawful gold transactions, uncovered a stash of valuables including gold, cash, and gambling paraphernalia.

GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, confirmed the development during a press briefing.

According to him, the Taskforce recovered 1.3 kilograms of gold, estimated at GH₵1.4 million, and an additional GH₵1.3 million in cash during the operation.

“During the operations, we were able to seize gold that is worth about 1.3 kg, and the 1.3 kg of gold is worth close to 1.4 million Ghana cedis… But we also seized a lot of cash from them, a little over 1.3 million as well,” Gyamfi said.

In addition to the cash and gold, several casino cards were found at the premises, further raising suspicion about the full extent of the illegal activities.
