Government moves to rename C.K. Tedam University and others

The government is in the process of drafting a bill to rename the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) along with other public universities across the country, according to the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
Speaking at the swearing-in of the newly constituted Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the decision follows broad consultations with key stakeholders including academia, traditional authorities, alumni, student groups, and civil society actors.
“Extensive consultations have been held with members of the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni bodies, student representatives, and civil society organisations.
Consequently, it is likely that the name ‘C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences’ will be changed—potentially in line with the original founding vision,” the minister disclosed.
He clarified that the move is not intended to diminish the legacy of individuals whose names have been honoured through institutional renaming, but rather to restore the alignment between universities and their foundational principles.
“This is not to suggest that such individuals are unworthy of recognition; rather, the renaming is being proposed in order to ensure alignment with the founding principles and historical identities of these institutions,” he stated.
The bill, when introduced and passed in Parliament, is expected to affect several institutions that were renamed in recent years, sparking national debate on the balance between honouring individuals and preserving institutional heritage.
