Government suspends post-retirement contract appointments for public service staff

The Office of the President has officially halted the granting of contract appointments to retired public service personnel, effective immediately.
In a letter dated April 2, 2025, and signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, the directive was announced, placing a hold on all post-retirement contract appointments.
“The grant of post-retirement contract appointments to retired public service staff has been suspended with immediate effect,” the statement read.
Following this new policy, the Office of the President reinforced that “all requests for such appointments will no longer be considered.”
Public sector institutions have been instructed to adhere strictly to the directive. “Kindly take note of this directive and ensure strict compliance,” the statement concluded.
This decision is likely to impact numerous ongoing and prospective contract arrangements within the public sector.
Although the statement did not outline the reasons behind the suspension, it suggests a possible shift in policy regarding post-retirement employment in public service.
