Government touts fiscal discipline as cornerstone of economic recovery

Felix Kwakye Ofosu has pointed to strict fiscal discipline as the defining policy behind the current administration’s economic management, pushing back against opposition claims that the recent 2026 budget lacks substance.
The Government Spokesperson, while defending government’s financial plan, contrasted the current economic indicators with the situation inherited from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
“The problem of the NPP, admittedly… was that they were undisciplined as far as the fiscal management of the Ghanaian economy was concerned,” Kwakye Ofosu stated in an interview on Joy Prime monitored by MyNewsGh.
“They spent far more than we could afford as a country. They ended up bankrupting us.”
He detailed specific enforcement measures, including a cap on non-essential expenditures and a requirement for all ministries to seek express spending authorization from the Finance Minister.
Transitioning to the budget’s allocations, the spokesperson highlighted significant investments in social sectors.
“A lot of money now goes into education… over 30 billion [Cedis] has gone to free senior high school,” he said, adding that the National Health Insurance Scheme has been allocated 11 billion Cedis.
Concluding his defense, Kwakye Ofosu stated, “What has defined the performance of this government is discipline, fiscal discipline… We have drawn useful lessons from the past.”
