“Gov’t engaged in grand corruption and fiscal lawlessness in ‘Big Push’ project” – Ekow Assafuah alleges

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Lawyer Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has accused the government of engaging in what he calls “grand corruption and fiscal lawlessness” over the Ministry of Finance’s alleged approval of a GHC 50.9 billion expenditure for the ‘Big Push Programme’ without parliamentary authorization.

In a sharp rebuke on his official Facebook handle, the MP said the move exposes the administration as “a government of illegality, thievery, and hypocrisy.” He argued that the Finance Ministry’s multi-year approval for road projects between 2025 and 2027 was not backed by Parliament, describing it as “a blatant breach of the Public Financial Management Act and Article 181 of the Constitution.”

“How can a government that claims to be promoting fiscal discipline commit over fifty billion cedis without parliamentary approval?” he asked. “This is not just illegality — it is grand corruption clothed in officialdom.”

Hon. Assafuah also questioned the staggering cost of some projects, including the Enchi–Elubo Road (71km) pegged at GHC 1.4 billion. “Are we now constructing one kilometre of road at over USD 1.7 million under this kleptocracy government?” he fumed. “The same people who accused others of waste are now looting under the guise of infrastructure.”

He warned that the move would saddle the nation with billions in arrears, stressing, “This government has perfected the art of illegality — spending beyond approval, mortgaging the future, and calling it development.”

“Nyame nkoaa ne nokwarefo,” he concluded, to wit “Only God is truthful.”
