Gov’t rolls out inclusive education measures for persons with disabilities

The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through inclusive education policies and targeted interventions.

Addressing Parliament to mark this year’s National Day for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Apaak outlined key initiatives aimed at ensuring equal access to quality education for all, regardless of physical or sensory challenges.

“Mr. Speaker, the Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the development of a mathematics curriculum tailored for visually impaired students to enhance access to STEM education,” he said.

He also disclosed that work is underway to develop a Ghanaian Sign Language Curriculum to support deaf or hearing-impaired learners.

“Education must be truly accessible, and no financial barrier should stand in the way of a child’s dreams,” Dr. Apaak added.

As part of broader support measures, the Deputy Minister revealed that persons with disabilities will benefit from free tertiary education, a move designed to foster full participation in national development.

Dr. Apaak encouraged leaders within the disability community to register with the Student Loans Trust Fund (SLTF) to qualify for this support.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), is currently compiling data on students with disabilities to facilitate smooth implementation of the policy.
