Gov’t to Pay GHC 1,500 tuition per semester for students in private SHS – GNACOPS confirms

The government will cover tuition fees amounting to GHS 1,500 per semester for students placed in private Senior High Schools (SHS) as part of a new pilot under the Free SHS programme, the Ghana National Council for Private Schools (GNACOPS) has confirmed.
Enoch Nana Gyetuah, Executive Director of GNACOPS, made the announcement on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, June 1, stating that the initiative will begin in the 2025/2026 academic year. He explained that the programme is a strategic partnership aimed at easing the burden on public schools and expanding access to quality education.
“Government is going to supply us with a tentative amount of GHS 1,500 for tuition, per semester,” Gyetuah revealed.
According to him, private SHSs have already declared their available spaces and communicated them to the Ministry of Education for consideration. Placement, he noted, will be done in line with the actual capacities of each school to ensure effective teaching and learning.
“So the schools (private) have already declared their vacancies for the Free SHS and that has been sent to the Ministry of Education,” he said. “The placement will be done in a way that the number of students will match the capacity of the private schools.”
Gyetuah described the development as mutually beneficial, saying school owners are excited about the arrangement.
“The arrangement is an attractive arrangement for these private SHS. The private school owners are very happy with this initiative and arrangement,” he added.
