Gov’t using trackers to stop galamsey excavators

Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reiterated the Mahama government’s commitment to stamping out illegal mining, popularly called galamsey.

Speaking on Angel FM in an interview with Obama as monitored by MyNewsGh, he explained that the government has adopted firm policies to regulate the use of heavy equipment that often fuels illegal mining.

“The Mahama government is doing everything to stop galamsey drastically,” he said.

He disclosed that a strong law has been enforced to oversee the importation of excavators.

“Anyone bringing in an excavator must specify exactly what it is coming to be used for. If this is not done, importation will be prevented,” he emphasised.

To ensure compliance, Kwakye Ofosu revealed that a specialised task force is tracking excavators across the country.

“There is a special task force that puts trackers on these machines to monitor their movement. This is to ensure they are not diverted to a galamsey site for illegal mining, except for construction purposes, which is the reason they were brought in,” he explained.

He added that the system is designed to act swiftly when excavators deviate from their approved operational zones.

“Once an excavator moves beyond its designated geographic area, we are notified through the trackers and can consequently lock them up,” he noted.

Kwakye Ofosu stressed that these interventions demonstrate the government’s seriousness in addressing galamsey and called on the public to support the fight.
