Greg was lied upon, he was framed

Former NPP Chairman Paul Afoko has opened up about the ordeals his family endured during his brother Gregory Afoko’s long court battle, sharing details in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat.
“Greg was lied upon. He was framed. They said Greg was the one who killed Adams,” Paul Afoko revealed.
He explained that he was away on a regional tour at the time, highlighting how easily public perception could have wrongly implicated him.
“I left Bolga and was going to Wawa because we were doing a regional tour…if I had not left Bolga and gone into the Upper West Region, they would have said I did it.”
Bola Ray interjected, asking, “Really? You believe strongly that you would have been accused?” Paul Afoko replied, “I believe that strongly.” The former chairman emphasized the intensity of the scrutiny on his family and the danger of assumptions when high-profile cases intersect with politics.
Afoko also addressed false media claims about his brother’s bail. “Some media went around saying that he didn’t meet the bail conditions.
He met all. It’s on record,” he said. He recalled a frustrating moment when his brother was granted bail but immediately re-arrested due to higher-level instructions.
“At the last minute at the courthouse, when he was to sign and go, the police officer who brought him got a phone call…‘put those handcuffs back on him. Orders from above. He will not go on bail.’ And they took him away.”
Reflecting on the personal values that guided him through the ordeal, Afoko told Bola Ray, “One of the things I hold dearly is to be compassionate.
To always stand with the underdog. To help the weak. To help the needy. And in this case, I didn’t see it. I didn’t see it.”
Gregory Afoko, accused of conspiring to murder Adams Mahama, spent nine years on remand before being granted bail by the Accra High Court in February 2025.
