Guard your voice – NPP MP warns ahead of 2028 flagbearer race

As internal conversations intensify ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 flagbearer race, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Nana Ayew Afriyie, is urging party members to prioritise unity and choose their words carefully to avoid deepening internal divisions.
Speaking in a studio interview on Wontumi TV with host Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Hon. Ayew Afriyie highlighted lessons from the 2024 general elections, warning that careless remarks can be weaponised by political opponents.
He recalled how, during the campaign, opposition parties circulated audio recordings of NPP members speaking against each other, especially in the Ashanti Region.
“Whether it is Ken winning or Bawumia, they have to guard their voice. This is because here in Ashanti region at Adum, they (NDC) were playing voices of leading members of our party to kill the drive. It was all over,” he recounted.
He stressed the importance of discipline in speech moving forward, especially as party leaders engage in a post-election “Thank You” tour.
“What we are saying in the ‘Thank You Tour’ is that after contesting, we got to guard our mouth, tongue, guard your voice,” he added.
Meanwhile, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has officially declared his intention to contest for the NPP’s flagbearer slot ahead of the 2028 elections.
His announcement follows a violent incident during the party’s “Thank You” tour, prompting him to withdraw from the exercise.
According to Agyapong, a student was stabbed by a member of the security team allegedly affiliated with Ali Suraj, a notable figure within the NPP. Raising concerns about the safety of his supporters, Agyapong said, “If they treat students like this, then what will happen to my boys?”
He explained that his decision to pull out of the tour was to allow Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 elections, to complete the exercise without distractions.
“I have decided to withdraw from the Thank You tour to afford Dr. Bawumia the opportunity to tour alone as the former flagbearer of the party,” he said.
Agyapong noted that he had formally communicated his decision to Dr. Bawumia and the party’s General Secretary, both of whom supported his move.
