Haruna Iddrisu reaffirms directive on teaching in local languages

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has reaffirmed his directive on the use of local Ghanaian languages as the medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Grade Three, stressing that the policy aims to strengthen the country’s foundational learning system.

Speaking during a visit to the Management of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) in Accra on October 25, the Minister explained that his instruction was intended to ensure clarity and consistency in basic education delivery.

“My understanding is that I made some comments and gave a directive, and I absolutely stand by it.

“The Ghana Education Service must uphold the learning environment and instructional standards as vital parts of improving foundational learning,” he said.

He emphasized that while the country must advance beyond literacy and numeracy, the fundamentals of education must be firmly established.

“As much as we all agree that we should go beyond literacy and numeracy, we must still get the basics right,” he noted.

Mr. Iddrisu further underlined the broader purpose of education, pointing out that it goes beyond academics to character formation.

“We are moulding character and behaviour.

“My directive on teaching in Ghanaian languages is meant for clarity, from Kindergarten to Grade three the language of instruction should be a local Ghanaian language,” he clarified.
