He should have asked me first – VeryDarkMan unhappy with Gentle Jack’s biopic portrayal

Nigerian activist and internet personality VeryDarkMan (VDM) is calling out Nollywood over a recent film inspired by his life, and he’s not hiding how he feels about it.
In an emotional Instagram post, VDM opened up about his disappointment with the film’s storyline, even though he acknowledged the actor cast for the role — veteran Nollywood star Gentle Jack — was a perfect fit visually.
“I have a problem with it, to be very honest I’m not even happy with it,” VDM wrote. “Baba Gentle Jack for write to me say, ‘VDM what is your story, I want to play your story.’”
He went on to admit the whole experience left him cringing. “Honestly, I am not happy about the movie, it cringed me. I was so irritated even watching it.
“They got the right character and we do look alike, however the story was just irritating,” he added.
The movie, “VDM”, follows a fictionalised journey of a controversial activist whose raw honesty and hard-hitting social commentary spark both love and backlash across Nigeria’s online space.
“It mirrors VDM’s rise — from being a no-nonsense social critic to a major force online. But for VDM, it’s not just about the resemblance or storyline. It’s about respect and involvement.
For someone whose life has been put under a public microscope — both by supporters and critics — it’s clear he expected a little more collaboration if his story was going to be told.
“At least reach out, get my perspective,” he seems to suggest. And honestly, he has a point.
