Health minister sounds alarm over unbudgeted nurses compensation

Government has expressed serious concerns over the full implementation of the proposed Conditions of Service for nurses and midwives, warning it could severely destabilize the national economy.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stressed that the demands, currently not captured in the 2025 budget, would “completely throw the economy off gear” if enforced immediately.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Akandoh reiterated the government’s commitment to dialogue but cautioned against reckless fiscal decisions.

“We are mindful of the serious economic consequences of unbudgeted expenditure,” he stated, adding that the government wants to “avoid the economic factors that led to the crisis in the first place.”

The Minister emphasized the administration’s willingness to engage further, saying, “The government will again stress its readiness to further engage with the view of implementing the conditions of service in a manner that does not dislocate the national budget.”

However, he maintained that the current proposal’s immediate adoption would be economically unsustainable.

The statement comes amid growing tensions between health workers and the government, with nurses and midwives demanding better working conditions and remuneration.

While unions push for swift action, authorities argue for a more measured approach to prevent fiscal disruption.
