Health Minister to address Parliament on COVID-19 spike

In response to growing public concern over a reported surge in COVID-19 cases, particularly on the University of Ghana campus, Health Minister Hon.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is scheduled to appear before Parliament on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

His briefing is expected to outline the government’s strategy to manage the situation and restore public confidence.

The resurgence has already led to the suspension of all social gatherings on campus—a move supported by health authorities as critical to preventing further spread.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reminded citizens that despite the World Health Organization’s 2023 declaration lifting the global emergency status, COVID-19 still poses a threat and must not be taken lightly.

Calls for urgent action began intensifying after the Minority in Parliament, led by Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, raised an alarm on Friday, June 27.

He warned that continued government silence and lack of decisive intervention could allow the situation to escalate into a national health crisis.

Echoing the Minority’s stance, Nalerigu/Gambaga MP Nurudeen Muhammed Mumuni emphasized the need for transparency and timely updates.

He described the campus outbreak as serious and called on the government to urgently address the public’s concerns through clear communication.

Minister Akandoh’s anticipated appearance is expected to bring clarity to the situation, offering updates on case numbers, mitigation efforts, and steps being taken to ensure the country is not caught off guard.
