HeFRA shuts down four private health facilities in six weeks

The Acting Registrar of the Health Facilities Regulatory Authority (HeFRA), Dr. Winfred Baah, has revealed that four private health facilities have been shut down within the last six weeks for failing to meet regulatory standards.

Dr. Baah made the announcement during Media General’s health forum held on Tuesday, May 7, 2025, under the theme: “State and Future of Health Facilities: Reimagining Healthcare in Ghana.”

“Already, I have been there for about six weeks, and we’ve been able to close down a few facilities, all private. We’ve closed down four facilities,” Dr. Baah stated.

He emphasized HeFRA’s resolve to enforce its mandate without fear or favour, adding that public facilities would not be spared if found operating below acceptable standards.

“I’m sure you heard that some years ago, they wanted to close down some parts of Korle-Bu. I can tell you that in this current dispensation, we are taking that mandate seriously — whether it is a government facility or private,” he said.

However, Dr. Baah stressed that while enforcement is key, there is also a need to apply a “human face” in some circumstances, especially in underserved communities.

He further disclosed that HeFRA has recently initiated the process of licensing CHPS compounds and health centres — many of which previously operated without formal regulation.

“So, the CHPS compounds and health centres, they are in evolution, and two weeks ago we started licensing them. By doing so, we’ve given them guidelines and requirements they need to meet,” he added.

The move is part of HeFRA’s broader strategy to raise the quality and safety standards of all healthcare facilities in Ghana, both public and private.
