Hon. Patricia Appiagyei Confirms Afenyo-Markin’s Position is Secure

The Member of Parliament for Asokwa and Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei has clarified that the position of the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in ECOWAS Parliament, is secure and cannot be revoked under current regulations.

Speaking on Okay 101.7 FM on Monday, December 1, 2025, with host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, Hon. Appiagyei outlined the circumstances under which a member of the ECOWAS Parliament could be removed from office.

She explained that removal is only possible in cases where a member ceases to be a parliamentarian in their home country, becomes a minister of state (causing one to resign from ECOWAS), passes away, or is deemed incompetent by the ECOWAS Parliament.

“All of these conditions do not apply to Afenyo-Markin,” she said, highlighting his continued eligibility.

Hon. Appiagyei also noted that Mr. Afenyo-Markin was elected Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament in 2024 and has already been sworn in for four terms.

She stressed that the only way he could leave his role in the ECOWAS Parliament would be if he voluntarily chose to resign.
