How is 71km of road costing GHC 1.5bn?

Vincent Ekow Assafuah has raised concerns over what he describes as fiscal inconsistency and excessive road construction costs under the current administration.

According to him, although the government has budgeted GH¢13 billion for the Big Push infrastructure programme, only GH¢7.6 billion was approved for 2025, indicating revenue challenges that could result in “arrears running into billions of cedis.”

He said institutions such as the IMF and World Bank “cannot feign ignorance” after previously endorsing claims of fiscal indiscipline against the previous government.

“Which narrative will be accepted of this government? Such hypocrisy!” he wrote in a post on Facebook sighted by MyNewsGh.

Assafuah also criticised the projected cost of the Enchi to Elubo road, alleging that “the construction of 71 kilometers… is costing the taxpayer about GH¢1.5billion.”

He argued the figure translates to “about USD 1.7million” per kilometre, contrasting it with complaints previously made against the NPP.

“They called the NPP out for constructing a kilometer of road for USD 1million,” he said, describing the situation as a product of a “kleptocratic government.”
