I abolished ECG’s outdated procurement model – Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has mounted a robust defense of his leadership at the utility company, outlining key reforms he spearheaded during his tenure.
His remarks come in response to recent criticism from former VRA CEO Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, who accused him of poor oversight.
In a statement released to the media, the Minority Leader and former Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) revealed that at his very first board meeting following his appointment in July 2024, he led a major policy overhaul in ECG’s procurement and contract management system, citing serious lapses that had exposed the company to financial risk for years.
“For years, ECG operated under a system where vendors delivering items to the ports would hand over the Bill of Lading to ECG without rigorous tracking or validation of the items,” he stated.
“I immediately abolished this outdated model and replaced it with a transparent, accountable procurement system where payment is made only after verified delivery of goods at ECG’s own facilities.”
This shift, he explained, helped ECG significantly reduce wasteful spending and improved overall transparency in operations.
Beyond procurement, Afenyo-Markin also detailed his commitment to the Loss Reduction Programme initiated under former President Akufo-Addo, aimed at curbing ECG’s systemic revenue leakages, particularly from obsolete or malfunctioning meters.
“As Board Chair, I prioritised the modernisation of ECG’s metering infrastructure,” he said.
“This included expanding prepaid metering and fixing inefficiencies that allowed for non-technical losses.”
The Minority Leader emphasized that his leadership was focused on accountability, financial discipline, and revenue efficiency, and said he welcomed constructive feedback—but not falsehoods.
Afenyo-Markin’s response follows Dr. Wereko-Brobbey’s recent comments on TV3, where he linked ECG’s losses to the Board under Afenyo-Markin’s leadership. But the Minority Leader insists the timeline does not support such claims and urged critics to rely on facts rather than speculation.
