I battled myself spiritually and physically before going to Parliament

Former Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has opened up about the deep personal conflict he experienced during his final term in Parliament, revealing that the experience left him disillusioned and eager to walk away from politics.
Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, the former legislator described the 2020 to 2024 parliamentary term as the most disappointing in his 12-year political career.
“I don’t miss Parliament. Let me be frank with you; my last term in parliament was the most disappointing of all the 12 years. I was so eager to let the term of office come to an end so I could walk away,” he stated.
According to Vanderpuye, his time in the House was marked by a persistent clash between his personal values and the demands of the political system.
He said the institutional expectations of Parliament often forced him to act against his conscience.
“There was a conflict between my principles and those of the house. That conflict was sometimes too difficult to suppress,” he said.
“Sometimes, I left parliament asking myself so many questions.”
The former MP, who served three terms in Parliament, revealed the extent of his internal struggles, sharing that it even became a spiritual battle for him.
“Sometimes when I dressed up to go to Parliament, there was a battle between the spiritual Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and the physical Vanderpuye. Do I have to be there? Do I have to go?” he reflected.
Vanderpuye noted that his political aspirations were not advanced by his time in Parliament, and that contributed to his decision to step away.
“I am one of the few people who have become disillusioned with Parliament because my political aspirations were never enhanced.”
