I got pregnant at 16 and my baby daddy denied me

Nigerian singer and performer Waje has opened up about one of the most defining — and painful, moments of her life, revealing that she got pregnant at just 16 and faced rejection from her baby’s father.

Waje recalled how the news of her pregnancy left her young and frightened.

“I was 16. I didn’t tell my mom till about five months,” she admitted Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast monitored by MyNewsGh.

The singer revealed that her mother, upon finding out, confronted the young man’s family about the pregnancy, only to be met with denial.

“My mom had gone to his family and said, okay, so your son and my daughter, they… and now this is where they are. And he was like, no, it’s not him. It’s not him,” Waje shared.

She added that the painful moment turned into a turning point for her family, especially her mother, who stepped up to claim full responsibility for raising the child.

“She just said, okay, so it’s not you, Abby. Okay. So know that if it’s not you, the child is mine now,” Waje explained.

The singer, whose powerful voice once dominated Nigeria’s R&B scene, reflected on how those early struggles shaped her into the woman she is today.

“In Igbo land, when a child is born out of wedlock, the family automatically adopts the child. My mom just took over. She was my strength.”
