I have no regrets engaging with suspect at Ridge Hospital – Health Minister

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has narrated his unexpected encounter with Ralph Saint Williams, also known as “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian, the main suspect connected to the confrontation at Ridge Hospital, insisting that he had no regrets engaging with him.

According to the Minister, the incident occurred during his visit to the hospital in the aftermath of the reported assault.

“Then I saw a gentleman pulled out in a black saloon car. He didn’t park well, and my directors around me told me he was the said ruffian. I’m not a social media person, so then he was walking towards us.

“I began asking, ‘Gentleman, why did you do this?’ In his attempt to answer, he was walking towards us and stretching the arm, willing to whisper something into my ears,” Mr. Akandoh recalled.

He explained that the man asked to speak with him privately. “Mr. Minister, I won’t explain here. I will come to your office and tell you my side of the story,” the man reportedly told him. The Minister said he agreed to meet with him, and the man later followed up at his office.

He later learned that the individual had been on his way to the Ministry to lodge a report but, after being informed that the Minister was at Ridge Hospital, redirected himself there.

Reflecting on that moment, Mr. Akandoh stressed that he had no regrets about how he handled the encounter.

“My cry is why didn’t I push him when he stretched his hand to shake me? Look, it is not in my nature to be disrespectful or rude to any citizen in this country, irrespective of where you find yourself—even if he has been sentenced to death,” he emphasised.

The Minister further noted that the case must be understood on two fronts. “Don’t forget the issue has two legs—what falls within the jurisdiction of the Ministry and the criminal aspect of the issue,” he said.

Although questions have been raised over the absence of visual evidence of the alleged attack, Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed that his priority remains the safety of health professionals. He assured that the Ministry would continue to work to safeguard health workers across the country.
