Police probe deadly clashes at Homowo festival in Sowutuom and Anyaa

The Accra Regional Police Command says it has opened an investigation into violent clashes that disrupted the climax of the Homowo Festival at Sowutuom and Anyaa on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that a misunderstanding broke out between followers of two rival chiefs during the sprinkling of the traditional food, kpokpoi,” police noted in a statement.
“This led to an exchange of gunfire, and the situation escalated when some attendees attempted to leave the festival grounds, resulting in further attacks at Olebu.”
According to the police, three people — Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo — died during the violence. Four others, identified as Enoch Amevor (treated and discharged), Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at various medical facilities, including Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.
“The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the injured are receiving the necessary medical attention,” the release stated.
