I have what it takes to lead the judiciary – CJ nominee Baffoe-Bonnie

Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has affirmed his qualifications and readiness to lead Ghana’s judiciary, responding to claims that his nomination was politically motivated.

“The President must have his reason. I don’t know that. I believe I qualify for the position of Chief Justice.

“I think I deserve that position. I have what it takes to lead the judiciary,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie told the Appointments Committee of Parliament during his vetting on Monday, November 10, 2025.

Addressing allegations that his nomination was a reward for supporting President John Dramani Mahama during the 2013 election petition, Baffoe-Bonnie rejected the claims.

“I do not accept suggestions that my nomination is linked to past political decisions. My focus is on serving the judiciary and upholding the rule of law,” he added.

The vetting, however, was overshadowed by a dramatic boycott from the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin announced the collective rejection of Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination and led his colleagues in a walkout.

“We, the Minority Caucus, hereby vote en bloc to reject the nominee,” he declared.

Afenyo-Markin further emphasized that the Majority could continue the process without the Minority and that any resulting report should be recorded as a majority report.
