I never compared Bawumia to Mahama – Kyei Mensah-Bonsu replies Kwesi Pratt

A lively edition of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGh took an unexpected turn when veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. referenced an interview in The Informer newspaper, which quoted seasoned politician Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu making bold claims about Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s political qualities.

Kwesi Pratt, during his submission, noted:

“He also argued that there’s no politician more popular than Bawumia aside from President John Dramani Mahama… His qualities such as personal integrity, incorruptibility, intelligence, and humble character put him above other standard bearer hopes.”

He added, somewhat critically,

“This is someone who, in 2020, claimed Mahama was more incorruptible and gentler than Bawumia… yet still campaigned for the NPP and Bawumia. So, does party allegiance now matter more than truth and country?”

Pratt’s commentary triggered a response from Mr. Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, who joined the conversation via Zoom to offer clarity. The former Majority Leader was visibly dissatisfied with how his earlier interview had been interpreted and the conclusions drawn from it.

In his rebuttal, he said:

“Unfortunately, what Kwesi Pratt said yesterday does not reflect what I said in that interview. I never benchmarked His Excellency John Mahama in any evaluation of Dr. Bawumia or any NPP hopefuls.”

He stressed that while he discussed desirable traits for flagbearers—like integrity and competence—he never ranked Bawumia in comparison to Mahama.

“It’s untrue that I said Bawumia is the only one who meets the same standard as Mahama. That is not a quote from me, and it’s not what I said.”
