I never defended Adu-Boahene over GHC 1.3m payments

The Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has strongly denied reports suggesting he defended the former boss of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Mr. Adu-Boahene, in connection with the controversial GHC 1.3 million monthly payments made by the utility company to National Security.

In a statement issued by his Executive Secretary, Kudus Gbeadese, the MD described the reports, particularly by The Daily Gist, as a “deliberate twist” of his interview on TV3’s Hot Issues.

“I want to state emphatically that at no point during that interview did I defend Mr. Adu-Boahene,” the MD stressed.

“What I did was to provide clarity on the matter based on the facts available, which the Attorney General himself has already shared.”

He expressed frustration at how both TV3’s Facebook portal and subsequent news reports misrepresented his words.

“TV3 falsely claimed I said the GHC 1.3 million payments were made to National Security and not to Mr. Adu-Boahene. That is not what I said,” he pointed out.

Clarifying the situation, the MD explained, “Ghana Water Limited entered into a contract with the National Security in 2018 to provide internet services.

The agreement was not with any individual. Mr. Adu-Boahene, who was then the head of the National Signals Bureau, led the process on behalf of National Security.”

He further revealed disturbing details from ongoing investigations. “What we’ve now discovered is that on our blind side, Mr. Adu-Boahene allegedly impersonated the NSB and replaced the official account details with those of his private company.

“So yes, we were paying GHC 1.3 million as agreed—but it turns out those payments were going into his private company’s accounts.”

According to the MD, the standing order issued for the payments was originally directed to what was believed to be the NSB, but was fraudulently diverted.

“This is the crux of the matter. Ghana Water did not contract Mr. Adu-Boahene. We contracted National Security.

“That the money ended up in his private account is something the investigations are now confirming.”

“So how does stating these facts amount to defending him?” he questioned.
