I never said I earn GHC15k; prove it – Ablakwa challenges Afenyo-Markin

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called on Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to provide evidence to support his claims that he (Ablakwa) stated during his vetting that he earns only GHC15,000 as a Member of Parliament.

In a direct challenge on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey, Ablakwa pointed out that the proceedings of the Appointments Committee were broadcast live on multiple media platforms, making it easy to verify statements made during the session.

“I challenge the Honorable Afenyo-Markin to prove when, during the vetting, I said that I earned only GHC15,000. Did you hear me say that?” Ablakwa questioned during an interview on February 8.

He further referenced remarks made by Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga on the floor of Parliament, affirming that MPs earn more than GHC15,000.

He also clarified that, in addition to their base salary, MPs receive rent allowances—a practice that began after a policy shift from housing MPs in designated accommodation to providing allowances for their rent.

Ablakwa also addressed allegations that he owns a property in Airport Hills but has hidden ownership by registering it under his sister’s name.

He described these claims as baseless and challenged those making the accusations to produce evidence.

“I have heard them engage in all kinds of illogical attacks. First, they claim that the Airport Hills property belongs to me, and then they put out fake flyers, claiming they have discovered documents—documents they never publish,” he stated.

He contrasted this with his own investigative work, where he ensures that any documents he presents are verified and made available publicly.

“I challenge them today to produce the document they say they have, which shows that the Airport Hills land belongs to my sister,” he declared, adding that he remains committed to transparency and accountability.

Ablakwa has consistently defended his record in Parliament, maintaining that his actions are guided by his duty to protect the interests of Ghanaians.
