I vote for competence, not tribe – Assafuah stands by Bawumia

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has come to the defense of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stressing that the NPP presidential hopeful is unfairly attacked over matters beyond his control.
Assafuah questioned the basis of the criticisms directed at Dr. Bawumia. “What is his crime? He is being attacked left, right, and center for something he had no control over.
“I am an Akan, but above all, I vote for a Ghanaian who is competent,” he shared in a Facebook post, sighted by MyNewsGh.
His comment adds to the growing debate within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about who is best placed to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Meanwhile, Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has publicly backed Dr. Bawumia, describing him as the party’s strongest candidate going forward.
Bentil explained that despite heavy voter resentment in 2024, Dr. Bawumia still managed to secure a significant portion of the votes.
“It’s actually interesting to realize that despite the deep anger and disaffection from all sides, including NPP members not voting, DMB got 41%. I have no doubt he will be the strongest candidate in the next election. #Bawumia2028,” he wrote on Facebook.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially filed his nomination to contest for the NPP flagbearership. According to him, he is the most prepared candidate to lead the party into the next election and restore confidence among the Ghanaian electorate.
