I wept for Ghana’s future at Oxford—Vickie Bright

Legal expert and former Deputy Minister, Victoria Bright, has revealed that during her time at Oxford University, she broke down in tears reflecting on Ghana’s future.

“Sitting in the historic halls of Oxford, I found myself weeping for Ghana’s future. It struck me how far behind we are as a nation, despite having so much potential.

“We have brilliant people both at home and abroad, yet we are not leveraging our talent effectively,” she stated.

Bright emphasized that while other nations are making groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and space exploration, Ghana is still struggling with basic infrastructure and industrialization.

“We were a country of firsts—the first sub-Saharan nation to gain independence—but today, we can’t even point to a single area where we are truly excelling. We are still exporting raw materials and importing value-added products.

Corruption, infrastructural limitations, and lack of visionary leadership have kept us stuck,” she lamented.

She, however, remains hopeful, urging Ghanaians to rethink their approach to development.

“We must push for excellence, invest in innovation, and stop patting ourselves on the back for doing the bare minimum. The world is moving fast, and we can’t afford to be left behind.”
