I will contest for NPP flagbearer – Kennedy Agyapong declares after stabbing incident
Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has officially declared his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following a violent incident that marred the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour.
The outspoken politician made the announcement shortly after withdrawing from the tour, citing security concerns for his supporters.
His decision follows the stabbing of a student allegedly by a member of the security detail linked to Ali Suraj, a known figure within the party.
“If they treat students like this, then what will happen to my boys?” Agyapong questioned.
“I have decided to withdraw from the Thank You tour to afford Dr. Bawumia the opportunity to tour alone as the former flagbearer of the party.”
According to Agyapong, he communicated his decision to both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the party’s General Secretary, and they agreed with his decision.
“I don’t want to talk much but just pull out so that Dr. Bawumia will continue his Thank You tour. I am not leaving this here. I will ensure I deal with the one involved,” he said.
Agyapong stressed that justice must be served for the stabbed student, noting that he cannot abandon his followers in times of crisis. “I want justice for the young man who has been stabbed because I want to assure my followers that I will not leave them in times of problems,” he added.
He then used the platform to announce his next political move, declaring: “I am using this opportunity to announce that I will be contesting because we have built the party for a very long time.”
This will be the second time Kennedy Agyapong is vying for the NPP’s flagbearer position. Ahead of the 2024 elections, he was the closest contender to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia polled 118,210 votes, representing 61.47%, while Agyapong garnered 71,996 votes, representing 37.41%.
The NPP primaries leading up to the 2024 elections were marked by fierce competition between Bawumia and Agyapong, who is known for his bold style and strong grassroots appeal within the party.
His renewed ambition sets the stage for what may be another intense leadership race as the NPP eyes the 2028 general elections.
