I will still choose you

Mavis Kumi, wife of the late Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi, delivered an emotional message during his funeral, expressing gratitude, pain, and deep admiration for her husband, whose political and legal battles dominated his final months.
Kumi, a first-time MP elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction tied to the contentious 2024 parliamentary results.
His legal troubles began in February 2025 when the Koforidua High Court found him guilty for defying an interim injunction that barred him from presenting himself for swearing-in.
In her tribute, Mavis said her husband taught her to honour people’s experiences even when disagreements arise.
“You should not achieve your goal on one side, if you don’t like someone’s story, right? But it was really difficult for me to write her story, because you taught me to keep her story to myself,” she said.
She expressed profound gratitude for their marriage: “On this note, I write to express how grateful I am, that I am your wife. That I am your wife, I’m so grateful.”
Mavis described Kumi as a supportive partner who prioritised his family despite his demanding schedule.
“Babe, no matter how busy you are, you always pay particular attention to me, and make sure everything is fine with me and the children. You pay particular interest in my career, and always make sure I have a plan, and I’m steadily following the plan.”
She added that her comfort now rests in his lasting presence: “Babe, it is well with my soul, yes, because I know you are with me forever.”
Highlighting his influence on the family’s spiritual and personal development, she said, “You are a great person, and the impact you made in my life, and that of the children, will never be forgotten. How you always make sure we pray together, as a family, every morning… The morning affirmations you make everyone recite, we still do them.”
She recalled his encouragement and discipline: “You told me that everyone who wants to be the best in life must learn… you always assure me that quitting is not an option for you.”
Her message ended with a plea and a farewell: “Babe, please answer me. This silence is too loud for me… I cry myself to bed every night, hoping to get answers why you left today.”
“I love you, babe, and in my next life, I will still choose you, over and again. You fought a good fight, and you will forever be my hero. Rest well, baby. I love you.”
