I would have sacked Sammy Gyamfi immediately if I were president – Ken Agyapong

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has strongly criticised President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a weak response to the controversy involving the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.

Speaking at the Entrepreneurship and National Leadership programme at Central University on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Mr Agyapong said President Mahama should have acted swiftly to dismiss Gyamfi after a video emerged showing him handing over an undisclosed amount of US dollars to evangelist Nana Agradaa.

“If I were the President, I would have sacked Sammy Gyamfi right away. The evidence was clear. There was no need for any investigation. This would have sent a strong message,” Agyapong said.

He accused the government of promoting nepotism and favoritism, which he believes are undermining the country’s development. According to him, political connections now determine who gets ahead, even at the national service level.

“Today, if you don’t know a politician, you can’t even get a good national service posting. Young graduates have to pay or lobby just to serve at respectable institutions. This is wrong,” he lamented.

Agyapong warned that such practices result in unqualified individuals being placed in sensitive positions, describing it as a serious threat to national progress.

The controversial video of Sammy Gyamfi and Nana Agradaa, which sparked public outrage, also raised concerns over a possible violation of the Foreign Exchange Act and ethical standards governing public officers. Despite mounting pressure, President Mahama has not taken further action against Gyamfi beyond a cautionary statement.
