Ibrahim Mahama covers medical costs for Baby Phoebe’s leukemia treatment abroad

Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has offered financial support to cover the full cost of medical treatment for Baby Phoebe Gimelle Oware Oguh, a 1-year-7-month-old girl diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Phoebe is currently under the care of the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
A letter signed by Dr. Michael Akpoke, dated January 10, 2025, confirmed that while she is receiving initial care locally, she requires further treatment abroad, including a bone marrow transplant, which is not available in Ghana.
Following an appeal by Phoebe’s mother, Victoria Amissah, to raise $78,620 for treatment at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai, India, Ibrahim Mahama provided the full amount.
The estimated cost covers chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and travel and accommodation for Phoebe and her mother.
Arrangements are being made for Phoebe to travel to India in the coming days. The Apollo Proton Cancer Centre has indicated its readiness to receive her and begin treatment.
Phoebe’s case has drawn attention to the need for expanded pediatric cancer treatment options in Ghana. It highlights the role of individual support in accessing specialised care when it is unavailable locally.
