Immigration Officer found dead after suspected debt repayment meeting turns deadly

The body of a Ghana Immigration Service officer, Stephen King Amoah, has been discovered burnt beyond recognition, days after he was declared missing.

The case took a grim turn after police, with the assistance of the officer’s family, confirmed that the charred remains found at an undisclosed location belonged to Stephen.

A family member revealed in an interview that they were asked to help identify a body, only to realize it was their missing uncle.

Stephen was reported missing on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

According to relatives, he had left home at dawn that day to meet a close friend who had promised to repay a GH¢200,000 debt. The meeting location was set at Ashongman Estates.

Hours later, Stephen’s wife—who was away at the time—received a text message from his phone, claiming he had returned home with the money.

But she immediately noticed something strange.

The tone and wording were unlike anything her husband would say. Sensing something was wrong, she alerted Stephen’s brother to check the house. He found no sign of Stephen.

The family filed a police report shortly after, triggering an investigation that led to the discovery of the body.

Authorities have not yet confirmed who was behind the killing or if the friend who owed the money has been arrested.

The Ghana Police Service says investigations are still ongoing and have promised to release more details soon.
