Independent candidates stand little chance in Tamale Central – Political scientist

Dr. Gbensuglo Alidu Bukari, Senior Political Science lecturer and Head of the Department of Political Science at the University for Development Studies, has projected that Professor Seidu Mahama Alidu is certain to represent Tamale Central in Parliament following his decisive win in the NDC parliamentary primary.
“Therefore, unless an independent candidate can galvanise substantial grassroots support and present a compelling alternative to the NDC’s candidate, the chances of winning the by-election slated for September 30, 2025 appear slim,” Dr. Bukari explained.
He added, “This means that Prof. Alidu’s victory in the primary positions him as the automatic winner in the upcoming by-election.”
According to him, the political history of Tamale Central strongly favors the NDC, making it extremely difficult for any independent aspirant to mount a serious challenge.
“Unless an Independent candidate could conjure something special, Prof Alidu’s place in Parliament was assured at the September 30, 2025 parliamentary by-election,”* Dr. Bukari emphasized.
Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu emerged victorious in last Saturday’s primary, polling 840 out of 1,500 valid votes cast in a contest that featured 12 aspirants.
His closest rival, Hanan Gundadow Abdul-Rahaman, former Chief Executive of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, secured 536 votes.
With the by-election weeks away, Prof. Alidu’s commanding primary win and the constituency’s history of loyalty to the NDC appear to leave little doubt about the likely outcome.
