India’s PM Modi honours Nkrumah during visit to Ghana

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his official state visit to Ghana, paid a solemn tribute to Ghana’s founding father, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as part of his tour of Parliament.

The symbolic moment, which drew both local and international attention, was highlighted by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a reflective social media post.

Ablakwa noted that Modi’s gesture was not only respectful but historically significant, tying back to the deep-rooted diplomatic relations between Ghana and India.

He wrote: “India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays his respects to Ghana’s Founder, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Kwame Nkrumah and Jawaharlal Nehru established formal diplomatic ties between Ghana and India in 1957 and went on to found the Non-Aligned Movement.”

Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, revered for leading Ghana to independence in 1957, became the country’s first Prime Minister and later its first President.

A passionate Pan-Africanist, he championed African unity and self-governance, and under his leadership, Ghana became a symbol of liberation for the continent.
