Ing. Prince Osisiadan, CEO of SUCCA Africa has emphasized the urgent need for climate action within the sports community at the Global Sports and Sustainability Forum 2025 in Cape Town.
Speaking on the topic “Climate Change and Biodiversity and Sports”, Ing Osisiadan stated that Sports are not immune to environmental change, from the quality of air we breathe to the grass under our cleats, climate and nature shape the game.
Ing. Osisiadan who is a Cambridge University trained sustainability practitioner highlighted the immediate impacts of climate change on sports, detailing how heatwaves have led to match cancellations in football, tennis, and track events.
He noted that flooded pitches have disrupted youth leagues and even professional golf tournaments, while smog and wildfire smoke threaten the respiratory health of athletes.
In an opening remark, Ghana’s Sports Minister Kofi Adams emphasized the need for innovative solutions to the challenges posed by climate change. He unveiled a series of green initiatives, urging stakeholders to reimagine sports infrastructure as a catalyst for environmental resilience.
“Flooded pitches and unpredictable weather are disrupting competitions,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Adams also announced the upcoming launch of a National Recreation Agency aimed at promoting climate-conscious wellness, signaling a strong commitment from the Ghanaian government to lead in sustainable sports development.
GHALCA President John Ansah further reinforced the call for sustainability, noting the critical role of African football in this movement.
“We must act decisively,” he stated, highlighting the collaborative efforts of GHALCA, SUCCA Africa, and SPORTS20 in advancing the Green Futball Initiative.
Ansah highlighted that African football has a unique opportunity to lead by example in sustainability, inspiring future generations to embrace eco-friendly practices.
Concluding his speech, Ing. Osisiadan encouraged players, fans, and clubs to choose sustainable travel, support biodiversity, stressing that protecting nature is synonymous with protecting the future of sport.
Ing. Prince Osisiadan is a member of the Ghana Bar Association and the Ghana Institution of Engineering. Additionally, he is a certified ISO 14001 lead auditor and holds certifications from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) as a Sustainability and Climate Risk Professional.
