It lies with institutions, not gov’t – Ekow Assafuah on 24-hour economy

Old Tafo MP, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has clarified his position on the controversial 24-hour economy proposal, stressing that while he believes in the concept, the government is incapable of driving it.

He explained that the idea of round-the-clock work is not new, since many sectors already run on shift systems.

“I mean, you shift work in… I agree. But these things are already being done by institutions that have already shown the method to be able to do so.

“That is why today, if you go to your hospitals, nurses are doing shifts. Because it is not the government that is doing so. It is the sector that is allowing it to propel.”

Assafuah pointed out that a genuine 24-hour economy can only thrive if businesses are empowered through the right policies, not by political promises.

“If it runs, that is going to employ a lot of people. That is when the government has been able to enable the environment by way of its policies.”

He warned against misleading the public into thinking that government directly creates such jobs.

“It does not lie in the mouth of the government to say that I’m going to implement a 24-hour economy.”
