It was a private act of kindness

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has broken his silence following widespread backlash over a viral video that captured him handing out bundles of dollar notes to controversial religious personality, Nana Agradaa.

The footage, which has sparked a firestorm of criticism particularly within the NDC and among Ghanaian social media users, was interpreted by many as unbecoming of a public official known for his outspokenness on integrity and accountability.

Addressing the controversy in a statement shared on Facebook on Sunday, May 12, Sammy Gyamfi clarified his intentions, stating that the act was purely a personal gesture of goodwill.

“Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours,” he began. “To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.”

Gyamfi emphasized that the act was never meant for public display. “I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable.”

He acknowledged the discontent his action has generated, especially from supporters within his party. “I must say that, I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

Despite the outrage, Sammy Gyamfi reiterated his commitment to public service and to the vision of former President John Dramani Mahama, under whom he currently serves.

“My view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others, has not changed. I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President for the development of our country.”

He ended the statement with a nod to Mother’s Day, saying, “Stay blessed and have a blissful Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out here.”

The incident, while sparking debate about optics and judgment, also reopens broader conversations about political figures associating with polarizing figures such as Agradaa — a self-styled spiritualist with a controversial past.
