It’s as if security is not in the district – BYA cries over Gbenteng clashes

The Birifor Youth Association (BYA) has expressed alarm over escalating violence in Gbenteng (Gbeniyiri) and surrounding communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, calling for urgent peace and security intervention.

“Reports indicate at least five deaths as of Sunday, many injured, and significant destruction of livelihoods. The situation continues to deteriorate, with vulnerable families, including women and children, left exposed,” the group said in a statement issued on August 25, 2025.

The BYA described the violence, reportedly sparked by a disputed plot of land, as “alarming and unacceptable,” condemning the burning of homes, indiscriminate killings, and widespread fear among civilians.

They urged security agencies, particularly the police, to act professionally and restore peace. “It’s as if security is not in the district,” the association lamented.

The group also appealed for traditional leadership to intervene. “We respectfully call upon His Royal Majesty the Yagbonwura and the Bolewura to exercise their revered authority to calm the situation.

“Your wisdom and leadership have always been pillars of unity, and the Birifor trust in your power to restore peace and harmony,” the statement read.
