Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, has expressed serious concern over the ongoing detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, calling it a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mumuni said, “We all know that it is past 48 hours, and I believe this is dangerous to our democracy, and they are setting a very bad precedent in this country.”
He questioned the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s actions and warned of the consequences if political roles were reversed in the future.
“If tomorrow NPP takes over the leadership of this country, should we also run after NDC businessmen? That will be wrong,” he stated firmly.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and later taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The arrest relates to allegations of financial misconduct linked to the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).
In a related development, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that Chairman Wontumi is under criminal investigation for several offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
“Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences,” Justice Srem-Sai revealed in an official statement.
He further explained that the investigation by EOCO is being carried out alongside asset recovery efforts to prevent any suspected proceeds from being dissipated.
“The criminal investigation is running concurrently with asset recovery processes – to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime,” Srem-Sai added.
